German automaker BMW is recalling certain vehicles over bolts that may loosen or break over time. The issue affects more than 155,600 vehicles.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2010-12 1 Series coupes and convertibles and 3 Series sedans and convertibles, as well as model-year 2010-11 3 Series coupes and station wagons, 5 Series sedans, X3 and X5 SUVs, and Z4 convertibles. The issue involves aluminum bolts for the housing of the variable camshaft timing adjustment unit; they may eventually loosen or break and could cause the engine to stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
To resolve the issue, dealers will replace the four bolts for free. BMW will begin notifying owners Dec. 12, but those with additional questions can call the automaker at 800-525-7417, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit NHTSA’s website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
